Dr Christoph Baumer (born 1952) is a leading Swiss explorer and historian of Central Asia, Tibet and Xinjiang in north-western China. So far he has led five major expeditions into the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, China, and made more than thirty research travels in the Central Asian and Tibetan realm. His discoveries and findings are published in several, well-received books in diverse languages in the fields of history, archaeology, religion and travel.
He is founder and president of the Society for the Exploration of EurAsia (www.exploration-eurasia.com) which promotes research into the archaeology of Eurasia. This is achieved in the form of fieldwork, excavations and publications of the research results. At present, the Society supports nine projects in six countries; three additional projects are concluded and have been published.
Baumer is a member of the Explorers Club, New York, and of the Royal Asiatic Society, the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Society for Asian Affairs, London. He was the recipient in 2015 of the prestigious Sir Percy Sykes Medal, awarded to him by the Royal Society for Asian Affairs.
